Book Details + Condition: Very scarce, first U.S. edition, first printing from 1857 of The Life of Charlotte Bronte by E.C. Gaskell. Two octavo volumes, original blind pattern brown cloth, gilt lettered spines and yellow glazed end papers. Boards and biding are solid and tight save for some chipping on the spine ends and light shelfwear. Pages are crisp and clean save previous owner’s signature on the second yellow blank page for both volumes. Some interesting old pencil notes from 1890 on last endpaper of Volume 1 (“Suit: $6; 100 Cigarettes: .50”).
