Book Details + Condition: Theosophical Publishing Society (London, UK). First Edition, 1896. Very scarce editorial copy, with notations and corrections made by Westcott. Hardcover measuring 7.5″ x 5.25″. 91 pages. Volume VII in the Collectanea Hermetica series, edited by W. Wynn Westcott, one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. ‘S.S.D.D.’ – the initials of the person who supplied the commentary – stand for ‘Sapientia Sapienti Dona Data’, the magical motto of Florence Farr. The work itself is a treatise by Eugenius Philalethes (Thomas Vaughan: 1621-1666), the renowned Welsh alchemist. The book is subtitled “Being a Short Discourse of the Secret Fountain, whose Water Flows from Fire; and Carries in it the Beams of the Sun and Moon.” Firm binding; rubbed corners and edges; front free endpaper appears to have been removed; some age toning to title page; interior contains several editorial markings and notations in the same hand of the author, W. Wynn Westcott – please see pictures.
